The Titus 2 Homemaker

Post, Photo and YouTube Audio Podcast by Rain San Martin

The Titus 2 Woman is a Bible passage containing the qualities of a noble hardworking woman.  Traditional timeless characteristics of such a lady are needed in our modern times more than ever before. You will observe that this teaching is countercultural for the twenty first century, yet if applied will result in a life of peaceful simplicity.

Let's take a look at two translations of the Titus 2: 3-5 text, to help with your bible study:

"In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not slaves to excessive drinking. They are to teach what is good,  so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, to be self-controlled, pure, workers at home, kind, and in submission to their husbands, so that God’s word will not be slandered." -Titus 2: 3-5 -Christian Standard Bible (CSB)

"The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed." -Titus 2: 3-5 -King James Version (KJV)

Good homemaker / Keeper at home

Today many Christian women interpret scriptures to say women are to not only maintain their homes, they are expected to hold full-time positions outside of the home as well.  This is because choosing to work as a full-time homemaker is sometimes viewed as an extreme lifestyle to the cultural masses. Yet if applied using frugality, one may find there is no more practical way to have a household.  Once a woman holds a job outside of the home she may find herself burning the candle at both ends, as well as neglecting her role as a help-mate.  Two YouTube audio podcast episodes which may help you are:

Now lets review other traits characteristic of the Titus 2 woman.

Reverent in behavior

Graciously be courteous showing respect for elders and people in authority. We can voice our opinion yet with tact and civility. This helps to create an orderly and peaceful society.

Not slanderous / false accusers

We should give others the benefit of the doubt. Be careful not to spread gossip. Only speak well of others.  Today's modern woman has quit often been brash and sometimes brutish.

Not addicted to much wine.

Many people drink in social situations to "loosen up" or appear easy going.  Excess leads to foggy thinking, impaired judgement, and foolish behavior. You know yourself, if you feel drinking alcohol makes you less than your ideal self it's best to abstain from it entirely. Temperance is also listed as a part of Benjamin Franklin's core virtues. "Temperance. Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation."

Teach what is good.

Part of the calling of older Christian women is to pass on knowledge to the next generation. Unfortunately it has become rare for women to teach the domestic arts. This is why I have taken a keen interest in Vintage Homemaking. Experienced women can teach others about how to implement Biblical principles in a variety of ways. One to one conversation, passing on skills to children, writing a blog or book, creating YouTube videos, or speaking at an event are ways to share knowledge. Some of these methods should only be carried out if there is adequate time, as they may be a part-time home business.

One Vintage Homemaking  book written in 1841 I recommend is:

To be sensible / discreet

This behavior is demonstrated by having good judgement in conduct & mindfully choosing our words. To be emotionally aware and responsive.

Pure / chaste

Not only should our outward behavior demonstrate a strong moral character, our hearts which are hidden from others should be pure before God. Dressing modestly despite the cultural trends should be a way of life. This helps to preserve the integrity of marriage.

Submissive to their husband

Statistics have shown that women file 80% of divorces today! Though both women and men are equal in worth and in purpose, God set up a natural hierarchy.  Our requests can be made known in gentleness. Yet ultimately a woman is to yield to the authority of her husband, as long as nothing sinful is being asked. Husbands are also held to high standards and are expected to demonstrate love to their wife. As a keeper of the home, our husbands can learn to trust our decisions when running a household. Major decisions should be made by the husband yet the woman can be apart of the process.
